You're ready to learn how to mix your own music. But where do you start?

Maybe you're completely new to music production and you're still learning your DAW. Or maybe you've been trying to figure it out for a while but feel confused and discouraged.

Music production can be overwhelming. Especially when you're on your own.

It was hard enough to learn how to write songs and perform. Harder still to learn how to self-produce and record your own music from home. And now you find yourself, yet again, at the beginning of a whole new process - trying to teach yourself how to mix. You’ve taken the workshops, you’ve trawled through YouTube, you’ve downloaded the practice stems…

And your mixes still feel off and you aren’t sure why.

You have a dream of being totally creatively independent. You want to be able to produce, record, and mix a song and have it actually end up how you originally envisioned it. You don’t want to toil away on Youtube any more, spending hours hunting for a solution. You want to understand the technical stuff so you can focus on being creative and having fun. But right now, things just feel overwhelming and you’re trying to understand everything all at once.

But to build a house, you need to lay a strong foundation…

Understand EQ and everything else will fall into place

You wouldn’t learn how to solo before learning how to play chords, right?

Or sight read without understanding bass and treble clef?

Of course not. Because those skills naturally build on one another...

Same thing applies to mixing. EQ is the foundational tool.

Developing a deep understanding of the frequency spectrum and learning how to shape the tone of any given instrument will:

  • Make dialing in the overall balance simple. With each instrument “filtered” into a specific frequency range, fader adjustments become intuitive
  • Allow you to make more targeted and effective choices when dialing in your compressors, reverbs, delays, and saturations. No more going in circles, get it right the first time
  • Get your mix sounding 70% complete before adding any other plugins or making any other adjustments

Which is why I've created a comprehensive EQ bootcamp and mix-feedback program designed to jumpstart your growth and spare you months (if not years!) of painful trial and error:

Mixing Fundamentals: EQ

Join me in this in-depth video walkthrough where I share everything I know about applying what I call a track's "tone-shaping" EQ. Listen along as we transform our raw, unprocessed tracks from this:

To this:

Using just a single EQ on each track.

No compression, no saturation, no tricks - just thoughtfully crafted EQ curves.

The Video Modules:

Watch in order and hear the song transform, or jump ahead to the instrument groups you're most interested in - choose your own adventure!

EQ Explained

In this first module we’ll define our terms, break down the frequency spectrum, and go over what you can expect in the coming upcoming videos. We’ll prepare to discuss EQ application through the process of EQing all 36 tracks of an acoustic pop song.

Often the most challenging part of any mix to get right, it’s essential that you nail your EQ processing here - each shell needs to feel powerful and clear and your cymbals need to feel bright and smooth without the harshness. We’ll remove unwanted noise, boxy build-ups, and set a strong foundation for the rest of our song.

Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Keys

A wide-ranging and jam-packed module, we’ll go over everything from how to keep your bass and kick drum from masking each other, how to craft a lush acoustic guitar sound from a dull recording, and how to think about slotting piano and keyboard tracks in a dense arrangement.

Electric Guitar

Across a whopping 16 electric guitar tracks we’ll tackle clean background fills, distorted palm-muted rhythm parts, soaring solos, and everything in between. No electric guitar recording is the same but we’ll encounter and go over most common situations.

Arguably the most important part of any song, we’ll isolate and discuss all the major points of interest and trouble spots when shaping our vocal sound. Through notching out mid-range trouble spots, cleaning up the ‘body’, and selectively boosting our high-mids, our vocal will feel full and bright. Finally, we’ll finish the song by bringing in our background and harmony parts.

Deep Dives

In this final mini-series we’ll take a closer look at how to process kick drums, acoustic guitars, and lead vocals. We’ll step away from the song we’ve been working on up until now and examine six new songs - two for kick drum, two for acoustic, and two for female vocals. Featuring a look at my entire vocal processing chain including compression and reverb.

Mixing Fundamentals

"But isn't music an ART? Shouldn't I just mess around until it feels right?"

While music is indeed an art, and every song is different, when it comes to EQ, there are some things that JUST WORK.

Boost your kick fundamental around 85hz and it'll feel heavier and more powerful.

Boost some 200hz and 8khz on basically any snare and it'll immediately feel better.

Cut everything below 85hz on your acoustic guitar and remove that low rumble.

I could go on, but you get it - there are proven, specific adjustments you can make to your instrument tracks to immediately improve your mix.

And if you're ready to skip the months of painful trial-and-error, I can show you exactly what to do...

This course is for you if...

✅ You're a self producing songwriter who's ready to take control over the mixing process.

✅ You're an artist with an project that you want to put out but it just doesn't sound right - let's work together to get it finished and released!

✅ You're committed to a professional life in music, wherever that might take you - musician, artist, engineer, manager, or label head, being able to talk articulately about mixing and frequency is going to give you a leg up.

✅ You're considering pursuing a degree in music production. Before spending all that tuition money, confirm for yourself that this is indeed something you could see yourself doing for your career.

This course is NOT for you if...

❌ You're already a full-time professional mixing engineer.

❌ You exclusively make EDM, Hip Hop, or Heavy Metal - this course features live acoustic instrumentation, no samples, and does not address EQ situations typical for above mentioned genres.

❌ You're looking for a comprehensive mixing course - this is a highly specialized series focusing solely on EQ.

❌ You're unwilling to put the time and work in to develop your ear and apply these lessons.

Meet Your Instructor

Hi, I'm Joseph

From basement sessions to professional LA studios, I've produced, mixed, and mastered artists at every tier. I’ve toured nationally as a drummer, managed a recording studio, and worked as a live sound engineer (mixing Tom Morello, Dawes, and Dave Chappelle!) - so I’ve worn a lot of hats!

My musical foundation, though, will always be as a singer-songwriter… way back in 2007 it was just me, my acoustic guitar, and Garageband in my bedroom making sad indie folk.

(Don’t ask me for those tunes, I hope they're lost to time)

Anyway, I remember the frustration I felt when I would listen to playback...

... and my acoustic guitar would sound awful. So muddy and boomy and dull.

... and my vocal would sound terrible - so boxy and nasally and gross.

And sure, there we're a lot of things going wrong at the time - poor recording technique, untreated room, etc.

But one of the biggest missing pieces was my inability to use EQ.

If I grabbed an EQ and attempted to clean up the tracks, I wouldn't have even known where to begin. No way would I have been able to improve my recordings...

Which is why I did I what I did - just tried to shrug it off and focus on what I could control (my performance, the quality of my lyrics/songwriting, etc.)

After an awesome drum tracking session!

Fast-forward seven years - I’ve moved to LA, I play in some local bands, I work a day job at a restaurant…

… and my self-produced music STILL sounds muddy and amateur…

Fortunately, though, my whole life would suddenly change in two HUGE ways:

  • I got a job managing a recording studio where I shadowed, and was mentored by, a industry-vet mixing engineer
  • I started getting live-mixing gigs at local clubs, allowing me to quit my awful day job at that restaurant 🙌

I learned a TON during that time in my life, but there was one key lesson learned from both my mentor and my time live-mixing that was truly eye-opening…

Without a deep understanding the frequency spectrum, no meaningful growth as a producer is possible

As soon as I began dedicating time to understanding EQ and learning how to use it, how to bend the tone of any given instrument to my will, the quality of my work skyrocketed

My mixes sounded cleaner and more powerful, I made smarter and more effective decisions with my dynamic processing, I dialed in tones and sounds more confidently… and within weeks my boss had me take on recording engineer duties, setting me on current path…

And now I want to help you…

Today, I teach independent artists and songwriters how to produce commercially competitive tracks from home with the gear they already own. I want to spare you years of frustration I went through as an artist and show you how to transform the quality of your work by taking control over your most foundational and essential tool: EQ.

Mix Feedback

Here's What It Actually Looks Like

Sharing an in-process mix with someone can be intimidating, especially when that person is basically a stranger on the internet. But when I sit down to review a mix from an independent singer-songwriter, it's not chore - it's an honor. I'll work to draft detailed, actionable notes that will noticeably improve your mix and help you develop as a producer.

Emailing me a mix for feedback will be optional, of course, but I strongly encourage that you take advantage of the opportunity - it's the only sure-fire way that you'll internalize the course lessons and techniques.
